Development and Evaluation of Patient Safety Education Program for Undergraduate Nursing Students

Abstract

|
Purpose: The aim of this study is to develop a patient safety education program for undergraduate nursing students and evaluate its effectiveness.
Methods: This study was conducted using a randomized control group pre and post test design. The participants were fifty five undergraduate nursing students. They were assigned to either an experimental group (n=27) or a control group (n=28). Students participated in the education program consisting of a total 4 sessions including knowledge, attitude and activities of patient safety, then evaluated through self-report structured questionnaires. Datas were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 with Descriptive statistics, x2 test, Fisher¡¯s exact, Independent t-test, Paired t-test. Teaching methods were lecture, practice and discussion.
Results: Knowledge score of patient safety were significantly improved in the experimental group compared to the control group. But there were no significant difference of attitude and activity score.
Conclusion: Based on these findings, we suggest that repeated and longitudinal studies are needed to improve the effectiveness of this program and enhance patient safety capabilities.
